Brisbane door always open for McKay

Brisbane Roar coach Rado Vidosic says the door is always open for revered former captain Matt McKay to return to the club.

McKay who led Brisbane to the 2010/11 A-League title made a surprise appearance at Roar training on Friday ahead of next week s Socceroos camp.

The 29-year-old is recovering from surgery to repair a fractured cheekbone sustained while turning out for South Korean club Busan I Park and has returned to his hometown to boost his fitness ahead of the East Asian Cup 2013 qualifiers.

Facing a Sunday clash against Central Coast, Vidosic would dearly love to have old hand McKay back in his squad on a permanent basis, and gave the club legend an open invitation to do just that at any time.

He was a great captain, he was part of that 36 undef…

Gomez dreaming of Argentina call-up

Catania midfielder Alejandro Gomez has revealed he still hopes to represent Argentina in the future, but acknowledges it will difficult.

The 24-year-old joined the Serie A side in 2010 and has impressed with his form so far this season, notching four goals and five assists in his 14 league appearances.

However, the former San Lorenzo man is under no illusions as to the difficulty of breaking into Alejandro Sabella s Argentina set-up, particularly when playing for a club outside of the Scudetto s major players.

Here in Italy, people see me playing every week and they see I m doing fine, scoring goals. So they ask me: When do you think you ll be called up by Argentina?’ he told Goal.com.

But I always tell them the same thing. In the position I play, ther…

Wenger: Messi still the best

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Lionel Messi deserves the Ballon d Or because of his outrageous goalscoring record this year.

The Gunners boss said the Argentina international deserves to retain his award ahead of Real Madrid s Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona team-mate Andres Iniesta.

Despite being impressed by all three candidates, the Frenchman thinks that Messi s 76 goals so far this calendar year make him the worthy winner of the award.

It s very difficult. For the class, Messi (should win it),” Wenger told Arsenal s official website.

He’s scored 76 goals in one year. It looks just outrageous to me. Therefore it would be one thing to reward something exceptional.

Ronaldo has always been there and he deserves it as well. He won t…

Mourinho pledges support to authorities as FA investigate Rudiger claims

Jose Mourinho will support any decision the authorities make in to try to tackle racism as the Football Association (FA) confirmed it is looking into Antonio Rudiger s allegations he was abused during Chelsea s Premier League match with Tottenham.

Chelsea were 2-0 winners in a heated London derby on Sunday, though the result was overshadowed by an incident in the second half.

Rudiger, who was involved in a tussle that saw Son Heung-min sent off after a VAR check, reported to Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta that he had been targeted by racist chants soon after.

Frank Lampard later confirmed both Rudiger and Azpilicueta had discussed the incident with Premier League officials, while Spurs have launched their own investigation.

Mourinho says he w…

Glory chief Kelly resigns

Perth Glory chief executive Paul Kelly has resigned from his position after almost three years at the helm.

Kelly, appointed in January 2010, will officially end his time at the A-League club on January 2, 2013.

The football administrator said it was a fitting time to allow another individual to steer the club into a new direction.

It s three years to the day that I gave (Glory owner) Tony Sage a commitment to assist the game I love, Kelly said.

I feel now is the right time to hand the reins over.

The club was on its knees three years ago but Perth Glory can now look to future with real positivity.

I m also satisfied with the exceptional community and development program we developed.

Chairman and owner Sage said Kelly would …

Materazzi: They will miss Mourinho

Marco Materazzi says people will not fully appreciate the value of Jose Mourinho s achievements at Real Madrid until he has left the club.

The Portuguese coach has received his fair share of criticism since he arrived at Madrid in 2010, and former Inter Milan defender Materazzi feels Mourinho deserves more respect for what he has done at Santiago Bernabeu.

When he leaves Spain people will value what he s achieved, as they did in Italy, Materazzi told Marca.

The Italian said Mourinho s main objective at Madrid is to help the club to their 10th European Cup title.

I speak to him every so often and I know that his priority is the Champions League and winning Madrid its 10th title, he said.

Madrid finished second in Group D behind Borussia Dortmund…

Oscar: Chelsea determined for Club World Cup success

Chelsea midfielder Oscar believes the Club World Cup is no meaningless exercise and is determined to return to Stamford Bridge with the trophy.

The Blues kick off their tournament at the semi-final stage against Mexican outfit Monterrey and, if victorious, will face either Egypt s Al Ahly or Brazil s Corinthians in next Sunday s final at the International Stadium in Yokohama.

The tournament has been derided in some quarters due to its mid-season timing and choice of Japan as the location.

But the Brazil international insists this will not stop both him and his team-mates from putting in every effort to join Manchester United as the second English winner of the tournament.

For Chelsea, we are representing Europe and we are going there with a determinatio…

Jose Mourinho: VAR is killing football

Tottenham head coach Jose Mourinho believes VAR is killing the best league in the world as Spurs appeal Son Heung-min s red card in the Premier League defeat to rivals Chelsea.

Son was sent off for kicking out at Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger during Tottenham s 2-0 London derby loss to Frank Lampard s Blues on Sunday.

The 62nd-minute dismissal followed a VAR intervention due to Son s reaction in retaliation to a challenge by Rudiger – referee Anthony Taylor initially seeing no offence before he was overruled by video assistant referee Paul Tierney.

The situation with Son, I think Mr Tierney got it wrong. It s the wrong call, Mourinho said. This is England, the Premier League, the best competition in the world, with characteristics that if we change them we …

Man Utd want to get to Liverpool´s level, admits Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has cast an envious eye towards Liverpool after admitting his Manchester United side are not yet at the level he had hoped.

Solskjaer has been in the job for just over a year – initially in a caretaker capacity – with his inconsistent team heading into Christmas eighth in the Premier League.

They are seven points behind fourth-placed Chelsea and a whopping 24 adrift of table-toppers and arch-rivals Liverpool.

The Merseysiders appear well set to end their 29-year wait for domestic supremacy after also being crowned European and world champions over the past seven months.

It might not sit easy with the Old Trafford faithful but Jurgen Klopp s men are now the standard-bearers in English football with Solskjaer conceding his first 12 …
