Platini rounds on Euro 2016 critics

UEFA president Michel Platini has told European Championship expansion critics not to play if they do not like the changes.

The competition finals originally only contained four teams when it started in 1960, before expanding to eight for the 1980 edition and then to 16 ahead of Euro 96 in England.

Sixteen sides have contested the competition in each of the last five championships, but that will be increased once again to 24 for Euro 2016, which will be hosted by France.

Speaking on the eve of the qualifying draw for the tournament and at the launch of his week of football plan which will see qualifying for the finals spread out rather than the bulk of international matches being played on one night of the week Platini revealed that England were among the countri…

Klopp labels Napoli ´horror show´ as ´worst game´ of his Liverpool tenure

Jurgen Klopp conceded Liverpool s 4-1 humbling at the hands of Napoli in the Champions League was their worst game since he took charge in 2015.

Liverpool were comprehensively beaten by the Serie A side in their opening game in Group A, the heaviest defeat by a Premier League side in their first game of a Champions League campaign since Arsenal lost 3-0 to Inter in 2003-04.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of their second group game at home to Ajax, Klopp did not hold back in his assessment of the horror show at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

After Premier League games were postponed following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Klopp also said his team would rather have played this weekend but respected the decision not to.

Yes, we wou…

Competition: Euro 2016 qualifier
Market: Portugal to win against Armenia
Odds:

Portugal travel to face Armenia in this weekend’s Euro 2016 qualifier, and given the impressive form they have enjoyed of late, it should be a comfortable win for the visitors. The home side have been the whipping boys of the group, picking up just one point for their troubles so far.

The away side are currently top of Group I after four games, and victory on Saturday afternoon will keep them at the summit. Portugal could extend their lead over second-placed Denmark to five points depending on the result of their game.

Four wins from their last five games will strike fear into a struggling Armenia outfit, who themselves have been defeated five times in their previous si…

Chile 1-2 Brazil: Luiz Henrique late show salvages victory

Brazil fought back from a goal down to score an 89th-minute winner that completed a 2-1 comeback win over Chile.

The hosts went ahead in the second minute of Thursday s World Cup qualifier in Santiago when a looping header from Eduardo Vargas went past Ederson in goal, although it was an effort that should arguably have been saved.

While Chile had chances to extend their lead and had claims for a penalty in the first half, Brazil equalised in stoppage time through a close-range header from Igor Jesus.

The Selecao controlled much of the second half as they went in search of a winner, and they were able to find it a minute from time. Botafogo winger Luiz Henrique cut in from the right and bent a shot past the goalkeeper to earn his country three points.

Bayern appoint new goalkeeping coach after Neuer argument around Tapalovic sacking

Bayern Munich have appointed Michael Rechner as their new goalkeeping coach following the controversial dismissal of Toni Tapalovic.

The Bundesliga champions sacked Tapalovic, who was said to have endured a difficult relationship with head coach Julian Nagelsmann.

But Tapalovic was close to club captain Manuel Neuer, with whom he had worked for more than a decade.

Neuer, who is out injured for the rest of the season, was angered by his departure and expressed that frustration in an interview with The Athletic, which prompted criticism from several senior officials at Bayern.

The club have now identified Rechner as the man who will come in to work initially with Yann Sommer, who was signed following Neuer s injury.

Rechner had been Hoffenheim s fir…
